Ancillary building materials

Dry mortar, alkali-resistant fibreglass mesh, insulation anchor fasteners, polystyrene granules, redispersible powder, vitrified hollow microspheres and putty — shipped from the same plant as the insulation boards, so one call covers a complete external wall insulation system.

System Components

The role of each ancillary material in an insulation system

The insulation layer only solves the heat problem; the durability and safety of the system depend on how bonding, anchoring, crack resistance and protection work together.

01Bagged dry mortar stacked in the warehouse

Dry mortar

Dry Mortar

Supplied as adhesive mortar and rendering mortar: the first bonds the insulation boards to the substrate, the second is pressed over mesh to form the crack-resistant protective layer. Both need good adhesion and flexibility.

Alkali-resistant fibreglass mesh

Alkali-resistant Mesh

Bedded in the rendering mortar to distribute stress and control cracking; diagonal strips are added at the four corners of doors and windows and at the plinth. Overlap width is generally not less than 100 mm.

Insulation anchor fasteners

Insulation Anchors

Mechanically anchor the insulation boards and, together with the adhesive layer, carry wind pressure and self weight. Usually laid out at 6–8 nos. per m², at closer spacing at corners and in positions with high wind pressure.

Polystyrene granules

EPS Granules

Mixed with binding material to make a granule insulation mortar, used for screed and fall on roofs, interior wall insulation and filling insulation at irregular positions.

Redispersible powder

Redispersible Powder

Additives such as redispersible latex powder for dry-mix mortar, improving the adhesion strength, flexibility and workability of the mortar.

Vitrified hollow microspheres

Vitrified Microsphere

An inorganic lightweight aggregate with low water absorption and stable particle grading, used in inorganic insulation mortar and in positions with higher fire requirements.

Putty and coating ancillaries

Putty & Coating

Levelling and finish materials applied after the render layer is complete, supporting the external wall coating and decoration work the company can take under its second-grade construction qualification.

Wall System

External wall insulation system build-up (inside to outside)

  • 1
    Substrate wall

Concrete or masonry envelope; must be flat, dry and free of hollow spots

  • 2
    Adhesive mortar layer

Boards bonded with the dab-and-perimeter method or full-bed bonding

  • 3
    Insulation board

XPS board / graphite XPS board / EPS board, thickness set by the thermal calculation

  • 4
    Fasteners

Insulation anchor fasteners for mechanical fixing, working with the adhesive layer

  • 5
    Render + alkali-resistant mesh

Crack-resistant protective layer, with the mesh in the middle of the render

  • 6
    Putty and finish layer

Coating applied after levelling, or a decorative finish installed

Supply formats of ancillary materials
Dry mortar25 kg bags or tonne bags, shipped by project batch
Alkali-resistant fibreglass meshIn rolls, common width 1 m, distinguished by weight and mesh count
Insulation anchor fastenersBagged and counted; length selected to suit the insulation thickness
Polystyrene granules / vitrified hollow microspheresBagged or bulk; moisture content and grading stated with the goods
Redispersible powder / puttyBagged, with types separated by use
Compatibility advice: buying the insulation boards, mortar, mesh and anchors in the same batch avoids compatibility problems between materials of different systems, and also makes it easier to provide inspection documents as a set and to submit site samples.
